Benjamin Franklin was one of the founding fathers of the United States and was a leading author, politician, inventor, and diplomat. He sought to cultivate success and character in himself and others by using a methodology of thirteen virtues, which he developed in 1726 and continued to practice for the rest of his life. Franklin was a wise master, mystic, and much-loved ambassador. Franklin would reflect daily over his actions and character before going to bed in order to improve himself. Here is a customized version of Franklin’s virtues of success (from The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. Philadelphia: H. Altemus, 1895): 

 

1.     "TEMPERANCE. Manage your behavior in a professional way.” 

2.     "SILENCE. Speak with both purpose and skill, and only when needed.” 

3.     "RESOLUTION. Resolve to perform with integrity and resolve."  

4.     "FRUGALITY. Invest in yourself and do not waste time.” 

5.     CLEANLINESS. Respect of body, clothes, or home."  

6.     "MODERATION. Avoid extremes.”  

7.     "INDUSTRY. Be engaged in activities that are purposeful; minimize unnecessary actions."  

8.     "SINCERITY. Be a constructive person who praises others; and, if you speak, speak professionally."  

9.     "JUSTICE. Keep your personal and business relations win-win where both parties benefit. Treat yourself and others with high regard  

10.           TRANQUILLITY. Be not distracted by the whims of society and focus on building your family, business and your customers. 

11.           "CHASTITY. Use your charisma in the right areas of your life.” 

12.           "HUMILITY. Remain teachable and right sized."
